Sample recipe. Replace this with a real family recipe and its story. Who made it, when, and what you remember about it are what make it worth keeping.

These were what Sunday mornings smelled like. Grandma made the batter the night before so it was ready when the first person came downstairs, and nobody ate until the whole stack was done.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 tablespoons butter, melted, plus more for the pan

Steps

  1. Whisk the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together in a large bowl.
  2. In another bowl, whisk the buttermilk, eggs, and melted butter.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir just until combined. Lumps are fine; overmixing makes them tough.
  4. Let the batter rest for 5 minutes while the griddle heats over medium.
  5. Butter the griddle and pour 1/4 cup of batter per pancake. Flip when bubbles form and the edges look set, about 2 minutes, then cook 1 more minute.

Notes

  • No buttermilk? Stir 2 tablespoons of lemon juice into 2 cups of milk and let it sit for 5 minutes.
  • Keep finished pancakes warm on a sheet pan in a 200°F oven.
